The Barne Barton estate was made up of 228 identical 2 bedroom flats. These were starting to deteriorate due to the build style, and accessibility to the flats was very poor. The proposed properties will provide a mix of tenures, house types and unit types, in order to better meet housing need in the area. We hope to also create a more sustainable neighbourhood. A high proportion of the new properties will benefit from level access, increasing accessibility to homes.
The first new homes will be allocated to residents living on the estate, in ‘phase 2’ of the regeneration. Homes will then be offered to residents who were decanted from the estate and have expressed a wish to return. The remaining homes will be allocated through Devon Home Choice.
There will be two construction phases in the regeneration of Barne Barton. This is to allow people to remain in the area where possible, moving directly into their new homes.
We are working with our contractor Lovell to offer training and job opportunities – these will be advertised on our website. There are targets set out in the planning agreement.
Yes, we’re building a new community centre at the heart of the new estate, as well as two playgrounds and a nature garden.
